When Fear Serves the Entrepreneurial Path

The Mindset of the Successful Entrepreneur

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy” – Dale Carnegie

Many new entrepreneurs face three big Fears:

  1. Fear of getting started
  2. Fear of Failure
  3. Fear of Success

The quagmire here is that the three of them feed off of each other making one big hairy double whammy in the form of fear that breeds inaction and inaction that breeds doubt and fear.

So lets examine them one by one.

Getting Started

Look, the bottom line is that you can never be fully ready for any project that you want to start. There are always gaps; the idea is to just start somewhere. The gaps will fill in as you approach them.

Failure

Most have experienced failure at one time or another in their lives. And, the fear of failing can be completely immobilizing; the beauty of failure, though, is that when seen with the right attitude, it inevitably morphs into wisdom and opportunity.

Success

As counterintuitive as it may seem, this is one apprehension that is actually pretty common, and it has a lot to do with fear of failure in that we are often afraid that the higher we rise, the further we’ll fall if we fail. In addition to that, it often stems from an anxiety around added responsibilities, longer work hours, loneliness and isolation, damage to our relationships and the criticisms that we will inevitably face.

The secret to using these feelings to your advantage is to get down and carouse with them

As a society, we are conditioned to perceive fear as a bad thing and to resist it; the good news is, though, is that it is actually incredible fuel that can skyrocket you toward your dreams.

With a little bit of understanding about what it really is, you, like many successful entrepreneurs, can use fear to your advantage. All you have to do is stop trying to get over it and embrace it; walk right through it; revel in it even.

Understand that it is the sensation in your body that makes you move. If you are able to analyze fear and get out of your emotional experience, you can get into your body and channel that energy to shoot you down the fast track of success.

Let your brain be your ally

There is a part of our brain called the reticular activating system (RAS).  The RAS is composed of neuronal circuits that connect the brain stem to the cortex.  This is the part of the brain that is responsible for the filtering of information, both incoming and outgoing. Because we are inundated with so much information at every moment of every day, it is impossible to take everything in. The RAS helps us, at a subconscious level, to determine what is most important for us.

If you can determine, with ultimate clarity, what your goals are for lifestyle and business, your brain, and your fear, can actually become your subconscious ally in helping you to succeed.
